Worse Than Napster Controversy?
Today I opened up my Facebook page only to receive another pleasant surprise from the Big Four world. According to an interview with Metallica drummer Lars Ulrich there is only one U.S. show because they “don’t wanna sort of overstay the welcome” and that they “don’t know what kind of response there’s gonna be to this in America”. In Ulrich’s opinion playing more than a single show would be “disrespectful to the rest of the wonderful country”. I’m trying to figure out just what kind of excuse that is. For months fans in this “wonderful country” have been practically begging for a Big Four tour. How is playing more than one show considered disrespectful? If anything, having ONE date is disrespectful to the fans; especially when it’s nowhere central! The claim that the Big Four don’t know what kind of response they’ll be receiving is just plain ridiculous.
Later in the interview, Ulrich stated his fear that the whole thing might “turn it into something that becomes this whole nostalgia trip”. Seriously? As described in a previous post, it took DECADES for the Big Four to put aside their differences and to finally perform on one stage together. I don’t think that counts as nostalgia; I think that’s making the dreams of many fans come true.
As talented as Ulrich is, anyone familiar with the Napster controversy knows that he sometimes misses the mark. There’s still a chance that there will be more shows, but I’m not holding my breath.
